LADWISE: A PROGRAMME FOR OUR LOCAL “LADS”
To begin, a massive and heartfelt THANK YOU to the Newry & District GP Federation for funding this programme as without which, this much-needed “LADWISE” programme wouldn’t have been possible! Bolster’s LADWISE programme finished with a proverbial bang at the end of Men’s Mental Month in June 2024. We are very proud of the undeniable success of this programme and its impeccable timing in the calendar.
This programme, aimed for teenage boys between the ages of 13-15 years old, sought to address the lack of support services for young adolescent males in the Newry, Mourne and Down area. Maurice and Feargal developed a range of sessions with the aim of helping our local “lads” adjust and cope with the uncertainty that exists in, what is perhaps, their most vulnerable and formative years. As well as practical lessons like First Aid and Head Injury Awareness, transformative discussions on diversity and inclusion were had. The “LADWISE” programme allowed the ‘lads’ to openly discuss their individual experiences and challenges in a safe space.
The teenagers talked about unhealthy choices and unhealthy coping mechanisms like smoking/vaping, drugs, alcohol, body image, social media and toxic relationships. Peer pressure was also discussed in detail, especially in relation to the more subtle peer pressure that stems from social media and the illusion of a ‘perfect’ life. While self-awareness and recognition of healthy coping mechanisms such as going to the gym with a friend, talking to a supportive guardian, and limiting social media were highlighted, the boys also had the chance to have some fun! Celebrations were had at Formula Karting, Newry, and La Dolce La Vita for a presentation of certificates! Feedback from parents was incredibly uplifting for the staff involved, with one mother sharing…
“My son has been utterly transformed by this programme. He has made new connections and has decided to go to the gym with his new friends. He is openly talking about his emotions and is no longer isolating himself.”
We’re so pleased this programme achieved what we set out to do, i.e. encourage participants to explore, discuss and engage with their identity, confidence and self-worth. Most importantly, it taught the boys when and how to ask for help from others.
To all our LADWISE graduates, we are so very proud of you!!
We hope to secure funding for further programmes like Ladwise and Go Girl! and will keep you informed of any new programmes coming through in the coming weeks and months ahead!
